BJP ready for fresh poll: Ramesh Bidhuri

L-G’s next report on political situation due in 45 days

Senior Delhi BJP leader and MP Ramesh Bidhuri said on Sunday his party was ready for fresh elections in the city. The party had come first in 60 of the 70 Assembly segments in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

Delhi was put under the President’s Rule after AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal resigned as the chief minister just after 49 dayss earlier this year.

The 70-member Assembly was, however, put under the suspended animation. Mr Ramesh Bidhuri said fresh elections appeared to be the only option as the saffron outfit, which was the largest party in the Assembly, did not have the requisite numbers to form the government.

Lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung is expected to send his report to the Centre in the next 45 days on the prevailing political situation. “The Union Cabinet will take a call on the fresh elections on the basis of the L-G’s report,” a source close to the Raj Niwas said.

“Our party is ready for the Assembly elections in Delhi and I am confident that we will come to power with a thumping majority,” Mr Ramesh Bidhuri said. The BJP had secured 33.07 per cent vote share in the Assembly elections, which increased to 46.1 per cent in the Lok Sabha polls. The AAP vote share also increased to 32.9 per cent from 29.49 per cent in the Assembly polls. In the Assembly polls, Congress had secured a vote share of 24.55 which came down to 15.1 per cent in the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr Ramesh  Bidhuri said the party’s top leadership would soon decide on whether to go for fresh elections. He claimed the AAP, which got an electrifying victory in the Assembly polls, would no longer be a major factor as people had realised their “inefficiencies” during their 49-day rule.
